Whether you spell it centre punch or center punch, the biggest comment we get with our tungsten carbide center punches is that they will shatter and that tungsten carbide is not suitable for center punches. This is of course true if you try and grind one out of standard cutting tool grades of tungsten carbide, but fortunately there is not just one grade of tungsten carbide! Most people are aware that Iron can be supplied in grades ranging from pure iron, through to high carbon, tool steels, spherodised graphite, cast Iron and a pretty much and infinite array of alloys and in some respects Tungsten Carbide is just the same. It is available in a huge range of alloys with various elements to give the properties for the task it is being made for.
At Niroc we use a proprietary tungsten carbide alloy for our center punches that has been specially formulated for this application. Again, this is expensive to do, but results in a tool that we guarantee is 100% fit for purpose! Our center punches are in daily use in fabrication shops around the world, being used for materials like Hardox and Bisalloy, hardened steel and applications that would see a regular carbon steel centre punch destroyed in a single hit!
Don’t believe us? I will 100% give your money back if you are not satisfied with all aspects of any of our tools!
Of course our centre punches can be sharpened and and also the tips can be replaced as they are shrunk fit into the brass handles, simply heat to a dull red or until the tip falls out and insert the new one while the brass is still hot.
